Die SODA Lecture-Reihe thematisiert die Frage nach dem Subjekt in Beziehung zu choreographischer und zeitgenössischer künstlerischer Praxis allgemein. Die Frage nach dem Subjekt ist heute wieder ein zentraler Aspekt der philosophischen, künstlerischen und kritisch-politischen Diskurse; deshalb bildet sie den Ausgangspunkt, sich mit den drei zentralen Begriffen des SODA-Studiengangs – Solo, Tanz, Autorschaft – zu befassen.

Noémie Solomon ist Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in der Fakultät für Kunst an der McGill University und erhielt kürzlich ihren PhD in Performance Studies an der New York University. Ihre Texte und Übersetzungen wurden in den Publikationen und Zeitschriften Perform, Repeat, Record; Planes of Composition; TDR; Dance Research Journal; Maska veröffentlicht. Sie kollaborierte in dramaturgischen, kuratorischen und Forschungs-Initiativen mit dem iDANS Contemporary Dance and Performance Festival (Istanbul, 2009); für die Retrospektive Move: Choreographing You (Hayward Gallery, London, 2010); mit dem Photomusée de la danse (Avignon, 2011); Danspace Project (New York, 2012-13).

Im Diskus über Tanz und Performance spielt der Zuschauer gegenwärtig eine Hauptrolle. Der Vortrag nimmt verbale Inszenierungen des Zuschauers in der Theorie zum Ausgangspunkt, um die politische Ambivalenz der Aussage zu untersuchen, dass zeitgenössische Performances in ihren Betrachtern spezifische Bewegungen der ‚Selbst-Aktivierung’ choreographieren. Mit was für einem ‚Selbst’ haben wir es hier zu tun und wie wird es konditioniert – in künstlerischen Arbeiten und ebenso in ihrer Theoretisierung?

In der täglichen Körperperformance meiner Gender-Identität fühle ich mich lebendig und zu Zeiten eingeengt. Soziale Belange, politische Realität, persönliche Zerbrechlichkeit – ich bin permanent mit Entscheidung und Verantwortung, Selbstachtung und Scham konfrontiert.

An diesem Abend werden wir eine Auswahl an Videoarbeiten zeigen, von massenkompatiblen Popmusik-Videos zu Videokunst von internationalen, akademisch engagierten, queeren KünstlerInnen, um die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen sinnlichem Begehren, emotionaler Gefährdung, Gender-Rollen und der Macht ihrer Performance zu diskutieren.

Zur Aufteilung von Zeit

Zeitökonomie ist nicht nur eine Disziplin innerhalb neoliberaler Marktverhältnisse, sondern kann auch in der Aufteilung von Zeit im Produzieren von performativer Kunst beobachtet werden: wie lange proben wir und wie lange performen wir? Was ist ein zufriedenstellendes Format und wer definiert die Parameter von „zu lang" oder „nicht abendfüllend"? Der Performancekünstler Florian Feigl entwickelte die fortlaufende Performance „300" als Künstler und Vater von drei Kindern. Er fand ein angemessenes Arbeitsformat, indem er fünf Minuten/ 300 Sekunden Sequenzen aus skulpturalem, sozialem und filmischem Material entwickelte – und 300 von ihnen zu einer Sammlung von ungefähr 24 Stunden zusammenführte. Ausgehend von der materialistisch- feministischen Prämisse von „300" werden wir die Aufteilung von Zeit in der Arbeit eines Künstlers diskutieren.

„Bewegungen übersetzen – Performing Translations“ ist das Motto der dritten Ausgabe des Tanzkongresses, der im Juni in Düsseldorf stattfindet. Am Kongress, der sich mit der Übertragung und Vermittlung von Körperkonzepten, Bewegungsrepertoires und Arbeitsweisen in und zwischen unterschiedlichen Kulturen befasst, sind auch Lehrende des HZT Berlin mit und in verschiedenen Formaten beteiligt:

Nik Haffner wird im Rahmen des Labors HOT SPOTS AUS DER TANZKÜNSTLERISCHEN VERMITTLUNGSPRAXIS (Sa. 8. Juni 16:15-18:15) das Tischgespräch Umgang mit „Nicht-Wissen“ in der Vermittlung moderieren: Welche Potenziale birgt „Nicht Wissen“ in der Vermittlung und wie kann dies eine spielerische Neugier in den Lernprozess bringen? Wie kann besonders in heterogenen Gruppen ein Lernumfeld geschaffen werden, in dem ein produktiver Austausch möglich ist?

Nik Haffner wird außerdem im Labor EMERGING ARTISTS zwischen Tanzausbildung und Tanzmarkt am So, 9. Juni 10-12:00 diskutieren, in welchem Verhältnis die in den letzten Jahren entstandenen Ausbildungsgänge für Choreografie, Tanz, Tanzvermittlung oder Performance zum „Tanzmarkt“ stehen.

Und im Labor WRITING DANCE (So, 9. Juni 11:30-13:00) wird Nik Haffner zusammen mit dem Choreographen Jonathan Burrows der Frage nachgehen, was Mentoring sein könnte, welche Wirkung diese zunächst von Produzenten und Förderern initiierte ‚Maßnahme‘ auf die Erfahrungen und Ergebnisse der Künstler haben kann und welche persönlichen, politischen, pädagogischen und kreativen Notwendigkeiten sich daraus für die Praxis ergeben.

Thomas Plischke und Britta Wirthmüller werden in dem Salon Das Elend der Form am Sa. 8. Juni 16:15-18:45 gemeinsam mit weiteren Beteiligten den Begriff der Form im Spannungsfeld zwischen Künstlern, Publikum, künstlerischem „Objekt“ und Markt untersuchen. Gefragt wird danach, welche Anforderungen in jüngster Zeit an den Tanz gestellt werden und welche Rolle Formfindungsprozesse dabei spielen können.

Denn den zeitgenössischen Tanz beschäftigen seit geraumer Zeit Aspekte wie Bewegungsrecherche statt Spektakel, Auflösung des Autorenbegriffs und Favorisierung kollaborativer Prozesse anstelle des abschließenden Werks. Gleichzeitig wird in der Medien- oder Publikumslandschaft immer wieder ein Bedürfnis nach Komposition, Intention und tänzerischer Bewegung geäußert. Das Interesse am Prozess steht somit dem Wunsch nach Form gegenüber.

Aus Anlass des 50. Jahrestages der Unterzeichnung des Freundschaftsvertrages zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich findet auf Initiative des Institut français und mit Unterstützung des Goethe-Instituts seit März 2013 das deutsch-französische Kooperationsprojekt Transfabrik statt. Spielstätten in drei deutschen und drei französischen Städten präsentieren aktuelle künstlerische Arbeiten aus beiden Ländern. Begleitend dazu arbeiten je acht Studierende von deutschen und französischen Hochschulen in gemeinsamen Workshops an einer Präzisierung eigener Begriffe und Konzepte am Vergleich der Rezeptions- und Produktionsbedingungen in beiden Ländern und entwickeln Kriterien und Instrumente zum Verständnis transdisziplinärer darstellender Kunst im zeitgenössischen Kontext. Auch zwei Studierende des MA Solo/ Dance/ Authorship – Céline Cartillier und Flavio Ribeiro – sind an dem Projekt beteiligt. Das letzte Arbeitstreffen wird vom 19. bis 23. Juni in Paris stattfinden.

The SODA lecture series takes on the question of the subject in its relation to choreographic and contemporary artistic practice in general. The question of the subject is once again a central aspect of philosophical, artistic and critical/ political discourse; this is why it is the starting point for dealing with the three central concepts of the SODA study programme: solo, dance and authorship.

What kind of ‚self’ is at stake here and how is it conditioned – in works of art, but also in the acts of theorizing it?

In the everyday body performance of my gender identity, I find myself to be vivid and at times caught. Social issues, political reality, personal fragility - I am constantly confronted with choices and responsibility, self-respect and shame.

On this evening will we screen an array of video works, from widely consumed mainstream pop music videos to video art by international academically engaged queer artists, to then discuss the complex relations between sensual desire, emotional endangerment, gender roles and the power of their performance.

On the Distribution of Time

The economy of time is not only a discipline within neoliberal market conditions, but can also be observed in the distribution of time when producing performance art: how long do we rehearse and how long do we perform? What is a satisfactory format and who defines the parameters of “too long” or “not full-length”? Performance artist Florian Feigl developed the ongoing performance work “300” as an artist and father of three children. He found an adequate working format by developing five-minute/ 300-second sequences of sculptural, social and video material – and he collects 300 of these until approximately 24 hours is reached. Departing from this materialist-feminist premise of “300”, we will discuss the distribution of time in the artist’s work.

HZT Berlin teachers are also involved in various formats at the congress, which will deal with translation and mediation of body concepts, movement repertories and working methods in and between different cultures.

Nik Haffner will moderate the roundtable discussion about dealing with "non-knowledge“ in mediation in the context of the HOT SPOTS AUS DER TANZKÜNSTLERISCHEN VERMITTLUNGSPRAXIS (Sa. 8. June 4:15 - 6:15 pm) laboratory. What potential does “non-knowledge” have in mediation, and how can this introduce playful curiosity into a learning process? How can a learning atmosphere be created in heterogeneous groups that makes productive exchange possible?

On Sunday June 9 from 10 - 12:00 am, in the “EMERGING ARTISTS between dance education and the dance market” laboratory, Nik Haffner will discuss the relationship between the “dance market” and the education programmes for choreography, dance, dance mediation and performance.

And in the WRITING DANCE laboratory (Sunday, 9. June 11:30 am – 1:00 pm), Nik Haffner and the choreographer Jonathon Burrows will explore the question of what mentoring could be, what the effect of this measure – originally initiated by producers and supporters – can have on artists’ experiences and results, and what personal, political, pedagogic and creative necessities result for artistic practice.

In the Das Elend der Form salon on Saturday 9. June 4:45 – 6:45 pm, Thomas Plischke and Britta Wirthmüller and others will investigate the concept of form in the field of tension between artists, the audience, the artistic “object” and the market. They will pose the question of what expectations have been raised for dance recently and what role the processes for finding forms can play here.

For quite some time now, contemporary dance has been dealing with issues such as movement research instead of spectacles, dissolving the concept of the author and preferring collaborative processes instead of completed works. Simultaneously, in the media and audience landscape, there is an increased desire for composition, intention and dance movement. The interest in the process thus conflicts with the desire for form.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the friendship contract between Germany and France, the German-French cooperative project Transfabrik has been taking place since March 2013 on the initiative of the Institut Français and with the support of the Goethe Institute. Venues in three German and three French cities are presenting current artistic works from both countries. In addition, eight students each from German and French university are involved in common workshops to specify their own terms and concepts in the contrast between the conditions of reception and production in both countries; they will then develop criteria and instruments for the understanding of trans-disciplinary performing arts in a contemporary context. Two students of the MA Solo/Dance/Authorship are involved in the project: Céline Cartillier und Flavio Ribeiro. The last work meeting will take place from 19. – 23. June in Paris.
